1b: A throwback to Totalitarian Society

It is hard to imagine a future scenario base on sci-fi films because those optimistic stories seem impractical in China and Hong Kong has a complex political background with mainland China. Thus political dimension becomes the significant consideration.

In my point of view, the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution inevitably left a lot of negative influences in the past decades, For example, Political status became a sensitive topic, the brutal government behaviors still happen around us and the strength and voice from young generation are too weak to revolt government.

All examples above reminds me of some plots of the novel “1984” which is a futurist dystopian novel published in 1949 by English author George Orwell. It was set in the year 1984 when most of the world population have become victims of perpetual war, omnipresent government surveillance, and propaganda. In the novel, Great Britain has become a province of a superstate named Oceania. Oceania is ruled by the “Party”, who employ the “Thought Police” to persecute individualism and independent thinking.

George-Orwell-1984

The novel focuses on the encounter of an oppressed, and how government use “double thinking” control and brainwash them (Barbara and George, 1993). Although the high-technology has not existed in 1984’s future scenario yet, the story presents another perspective that how people are destroyed by psychological torture. Whether in the present life of developed technologies or in the previous century when people displaced by war, the government have the ability to use cultures, techniques, even religions and lives as their own weapons. Thus, I think people might not enjoy the convenience and efficiency of information technology in 2050, but they might willing to become slaves to totalitarianism as political power will keep them docile and compliant.

Base on our research findings, the democratization of Hong Kong nowadays far exceed than that of mainland China, though they are strongly correlated. The main reason is that Hong Kong’s history as a colony and its geographical position of cultural exchange between the East and the West provides the foundation for economic and cultural development.

In addition, the “one country, two systems” policy refers to Hongkong has its political system to better fit the scenario of  Hongkong which is independence from Mainland China.

however, it is too hard to forecast the future states of Hong Kong after the 50 years’ duration of “one country, two systems” policy expired. The fever of religion, a tense international situation, and high-level corruption are still problems… At least, Hong Kong seems to be moving in the right direction.
